In its heyday, this Coal Mine was a bustling network of tunnels filled with men, pit ponies, coal dust and dim lights. Deep below the surface the miners geared up in hardhats and cap lamps toiled, digging the valuable black coal used to power steam ships and railway networks.

The Experience

After reporting in at the mine office, you sign your Union Membership Card and commence your morning as a coal miner in Denniston`s infamous mountain mine!

Kitted out with lamp, hard hat and raincoat, your work role is assigned and the journey into this historic 1880s coal mine begins. Travelling by train along the dramatic Waimangaroa Gorge, you`ll be taken back to the traditions and culture of life at the coalface. Discover the lost mining language of banjos, sprags and devils before 'tagging in' for your visit underground.

Once deep inside the mine, wander around the old coal workings listening to the sounds of the mine and unearthing relics of the past. Visitors can fulfil their role of a unionised mine worker - swinging banjos, clipping coal tubs and putting up pit props. This fully guided tour incorporates interactive displays and 45 minutes underground.

The Brake Head

"Tourism West Coast is very excited with the development that has taken place at the Denniston Mine Site. It is a fantastic opportunity for the visitors to the Buller District to experience what life was like for those who were involved in the coal mining industry at Denniston. The Department of Conservation should be congratulated on their efforts to "bring back to life" this amazing place. This experience will add real value to the tourism sector on the West Coast and will be a major draw card for both international and domestic visitors."
