Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What should I bring?
A. A sense of adventure and plenty of warm clothes, as the mine is around 12°C. The ground can be damp and uneven, so sturdy footwear is essential. We will provide hardhats, headlamps and waterproof jackets to keep you dry.
Q. Is the experience suitable for children?
A. Absolutely! Our requirements, whether you`re young or old, are that you can walk unassisted over rough terrain and in a mine for up to half an hour. We are, however, unable to take children under five years old into the mine. All children must be accompanied by an adult.
Q. Is the mine safe?
A. Yes. The mine has had to exceed the same safety standards as any public building would. Furthermore, visitors are able to travel 170 metres into this non-operational mine that for many years was used as a main thoroughfare tunnel, remaining stable and undamaged throughout numerous major earthquakes. It has been geologically assessed and strengthened with modern support systems.
Classified as non gaseous, the mine has natural ventilation shafts and is equipped with extensive safety equipment and early warning systems. Emergency service providers have also undertaken familiarisation training within the mine.
